Waiting for Debate in Michigan!

Hello Yoopers, Michiganders and Americans! I am home blogging from north of the Mackinac Bridge. I have my TV set to CNBC. One of the ladies from the network was talking about the housing market. She was talking in Dearborn near the Ford Performing Arts & Community Center talking in front of a house for sale. She said that because of Michigan's economic situation we never really went through the housing boom. Now that the boom is gone we are really feeling the hurt. Less than one minute left, til the debate. Check here throughout the day. I will add different pics of great cars we, the state of Michigan, has given you in the past 50 years.

75...Let's Keep Building Momentum!

OK Michiganders, I just heard from the Huckabee campaign that there is 75 volunteers from Michigan. Now, let's double, even triple that. All of you north of the Mackinac Bridge, I am definitely talking to you. Let's get the word out about Mike Huckabee. So you want to volunteer, click here. Come on yoopers, let's show up those trolls that we can get just as big of a volunteer squad.

Characters below the bridge versus characters above the bridge.
Hey just funnin! I want all the Huckabee supporters who can give their time to volunteer, wherever ya live.

Mighty Mac sure is Mighty

I want to share some of the pics I took from the Mackinac Bridge yesterday.

Starting to walk the bridge

View of mackinac Island from the bridge

Riders on a truck

Getting near the first tower
View of the cables and towers

Dizzying of view looking up at towers
View of the moon in the AM
(The little white spot between the first cable and tower is the moon)
Center brace of bridge
People on top of second tower

Walking on the grate

Everyone walking toward Mackinaw City

Fort in Mackinaw City

(This was awesome. British soldiers fired the cannon while we were walking)

My certificate number is 20,880

Finish Line

After I arrived in Mac City I walked toward the line to get on the school bus to get back to St Ignace. The line stretched from one end of Mac City to the other. The wait to get back was 3 hours. About 20 buses did not show up, plus there was more people than expected. Walkers from as far as California and Texas came for the 50th bridge walk.

Remember the Laborists This Weekend

As most of y'all know, this is Labor Day Weekend. It is more than just a holiday to have a barbecue in your backyard and get drunk on beer. It is to celebrate the works of those who labor in this country. Those who are willing to get there hands dirty. I want to deviate a little and say this not only includes those in the factories, but everyone who works with their hands.
This includes, but not limited to, fast food workers, waitstaff, retail employees, housekeepers (commercial and private residence), hotel employees, the guy who put the steering wheel on your Chevy, the contractor who put the new roof on your house. I could go on, but ya get my point. For info on the history of Labor Day Weekend, click here.
In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan it is more than just a holiday. It is when thousands of people, Michiganders, Americans and international tourists, come to the Straits area to walk the Mackinac "Mighty Mac" Bridge. Construction on the Mackinac Bridge began in 1954 and was completed in Nov of 1957. Every summer the iron workers who worked on bridge construction have a reunion in Mackinaw City. Even though the first Labor Day Bridge Walk began in 1958 this is the year that will celebrate the bridge's anniversary. The iron workers who sweated to get that bridge up should be remembered. Especially the five men who lost their lives while working on the bridge.

  • Five workers died during the construction of the bridge.
Twenty-eight-year old Jack Baker and Robert Koppen died in a catwalk collapse near the north tower on June 6, 1956. Koppen's body was never recovered. For both it was their first day on the job.
Diver Frank Pepper ascended too quickly from a depth of 140 feet on September 10, 1957. Despite being rushed to a decompression chamber the forty-six-year old died from the bends.
Twenty-six-year old James LeSarge lost his balance on October 10, 1954 and fell into a caisson. He fell forty feet and likely died of head injuries caused by impact with the criss-crossing steel beams inside the caisson.
Albert Abbott died on October 25, 1954. The forty-year old fell four feet into the water while working on an eighteen inch wide beam. Witnesses speculate he suffered a heart attack.
All five men are memorialized on a plaque near the bridge's southern end. Contrary to folklore, no bodies are embedded in the concrete. [2] [3]
If you are traveling this weekend, whether to Northern Michigan or elsewhere, remember the service people. Teach your children manners and to speak to others courteously. Don't let them make messes and be loud in public places or the hotel you are staying. That goes for the adults too. Please, pick up after yourselves. Unfortunately some people think that because they are on vacation, manners are too.
I'll let ya in on a little secret. The service people in the towns that you frequent will talk about you behind your back. If your kid leaves messes throughout the hotel, if your kids are loud at a restaurant, if no one picks up after themselves, they will talk. But if you and your kids are well-behaved the hotel and restaurant staff will be glad to see ya come back. Sometimes we even tell the kids and parents what a nice young lady or gentleman the kid is when he is behaving. We think your kid is cute when he is well mannered. We don't think your kid is cute when they make a mess or are loud and you laugh and wonder why our eyes roll back in our heads. Remember to tip your waitstaff and housekeepers while on vacation. The housekeepers work their booties off. Happy Labor Day!

Crossing the Bridge 4 Huckabee

I know Labor Day is still quite a ways away. But I would like to invite y'all to come up to the UP for the Labor Day Bridge. The Mackinac Bridge will celebrating it's 50TH anniversary this year. Every year, for the past 50 years there has been a bridge walk on Labor Day. People from all over Michigan attend this event. There is even attendance from non-Michiganders. Also is the occasional Asian or European busload of tourists. This year will attract national attention, due to the anniversary.

The reason I want to invite y'all is that this would be a great way to show support for Mike Huckabee. Think about it, 1,000s of Michiganders AND Americans, plus national media will be there. If we can all group together and show support for Mike Huckabee he will get more attention than anyone could imagine. We could all walk together wearing Mike Huckabee t-shirts and pass out bumper stickers, plus other literature with info about him. Unfortunately, we can not make banners. But most other campaigning activities are allowed. Since the Mackinac Bridge is 5 miles and it takes about 2 hours to walk people will get thirsty. If somehow we could get water bottles made up with Mike Huckabee's name on them to hand out that would be great.
I will do everything I can to find places for y'all to stay. If it comes down to it, I will go out of my way to put everyone on the floor in my 750 square feet house. Ya would just have to deal with Joe, my cat, wanting to cuddle. For Mike Huckabee I think y'all would be willing to sleep on Arrow Bed in a Minute and/or sleeping bags. In fact, I would be willing to give up my bed for any "princesses."

We gotta do what we can to get Mike's name out there. In a situation like this we need to think outside the box. I suggested this event to the campaign. I guess maybe they want to wait and see what happens at the straw poll. I say, "straw poll be damned." Of course I want him to do well at the straw poll. But if he could come to the Mackinac Bridge he would get noticed. This is not a political event. So Republicans, Democrats, Independents and those who do not pay attention to politics will be there.
Michigan is one of the few states that does not require voters to register with a party. Thus non-Republicans can vote for him also. Even if he can't show up to the event, at least people can see his supporters show up in droves.
If he were to win the primary, not only would Republicans vote in droves, dis-illusioned Democrats and Independents would vote for Mike Huckabee. Maybe I am over optimistic, but I truly believe he will be able to even attract those that don't vote.
He is the only Republican who can defeat Hillary. Remember, he is from Arkansas. He knows what Hillary, and Bill Clinton are capable of. He will be able to predict her tricks. Then he could play against her tricks, using honest methods. Even if there are Republicans who could play against her tricks, do you want a president who would use dishonest methods to get elected? Anyways, Hillary would have people to watch every move of the opponent and expose them, before they were able to expose her dishonest tricks. Hillary's people would not be able to find anything dishonest about Mike Huckabee. If you recall, in the book reports I have been doing (that I got behind on), in one of the chapters Dick Morris told him that Mike's supporters "would swim the Mississippi during flood stage" for him. Hey, we might not be swimming the Mississippi, but we can cross the Mackinac Straits.

Come on, whatd'ya say? Please comment. If the campaign sees lotsa comments about people wanting to show up for Mike they will take this seriously. Considering that Mike Huckabee is the candidate who is focusing on fitness and healthy lifestyle the most, walking five miles across a 5 mile bridge would be a terrific show of that.
I will add a demand sticker from eventful, please demand. Here is a link to the bridge event http://www.mackinacbridge.org/annual-bridge-walk-7/ .
God Bless from the Upper Peninsula in Michigan!
